ABOUT

Under her artist name YAOUNDÉBOXINGCLUB, French-Cameroonian singer, songwriter, producer and engineer Marjorie ‘MJ’ Bassong produces and records her songs in her bedroom in North London, as well as in her family home in France. Her debut project I Thought I Knew You, Boy Was I Wrong is an EP inspired by coming-of-age movies she used to watch growing up in both Limoges, France and Yaoundé, Cameroon.

ALWAYS TIREd

Having been making music since the age of 13, she is characterised by her wavy productions, poetic lyrics and warm voice. She defines herself by not defining herself and her music, letting her creativity flow and not limiting herself to a specific genre of music. Writing, producing and mixing all of her music, she wants her music to speak for herself and represent who she is: a free spirit. Her releases such as "Young," "Carry Me Away (I Wanna Feel)," "When the Movie Ends," "NIGHTRIDE" and more recently ‘Did It My Way’, a collaboration with Essex-based alternative artist tmdistant, have garnered attention and support from tastemakers such as Wonderland Magazine, Fashionably Early, Metal Magazine, DMY, DNü, Atwood Magazine, as well as editorial support on Spotify playlists; New Music Friday UK, France, Norway and Sweden, Our Generation, Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds Pop, Fresh Finds R&B, All New Indie, All New Rock and An Alternative Future.

  • Over 10 years! Started off making crappy DJ mixes on my family ‘tower’ computer, then picked up guitar and learned to record and mix music and am now here.

  • I grew up listening to a whole lot of music so my inspirations are very diverse. My parents listened to Tracy Chapman, Bisso na Bisso, Linkin Park, makossa music and Koffi Olomide on repeat. I discovered pop punk music very early on and it strongly influenced me, then discovered hip hop later on. I’d say my main music inspirations growing up were Coldplay, Paramore, Tracy Chapman, The Story So Far, SZA, Carousel, The Runaway Club, The 1975 and WALK THE MOON, among (so many) others. Later on in life, I went on to discover 80s acts such as The Cure, Kim Carnes and Tears For Fears as well as synthwave music, country artists like Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Linda Martell, and various indie artists like Ethel Cain, Best Coast, Dominic Fike, The Drums, The Japanese House and Hotel Apache.

  • I usually write, produce, mix and master most of my stuff myself, so all stages are pretty much intertwined. I’ll usually come up with a chord progression on my guitar or laptop and finalise the production as I’m writing the song, then start mixing as I lay down my vocals. But then sometimes I’ll do it differently, it can vary from song to song.
